About WD My Passport, My Book & Elements

WD’s external drives need special care. Many My Passport and My Book models encrypt your data on their USB circuit board, even if you never set a password – so simply removing the drive from its case won’t make it readable. Newer portable models go further: the USB connector is built directly onto the drive’s own board, so there’s no separate drive inside to connect.

How we recover your data

After a free initial consultation, physical faults go through a clean room diagnostic (£79 + VAT). We repair firmware modules or replace damaged heads using a matched donor drive, image the disk with professional PC-3000 equipment and – for encrypted external drives – decrypt the data using the drive’s own key. Your files are checked before they’re returned.


Prices

  • Initial consultation: Free – tells you whether the fault is physical or logical and the best recovery method. Doesn’t include opening the drive in a clean room or any recovery attempt.
  • Clean room diagnostic: £79 + VAT – the drive is opened in our clean room to identify the damaged parts.
  • Physical data recovery on a single drive: £450 + VAT – labour, plus the cost of a donor drive if required.
  • Deleted files on a standard hard drive: £99 + VAT – includes up to two hours of work.
  • 24 to 48 hours of recovery work: £150 + VAT (1TB) to £250 + VAT (4TB) – for larger or more complex logical recoveries.

Frequently asked questions

I took my My Passport out of its case and it still won’t work. Why?

On many models the connector and encryption are on the drive’s own board, so the drive can’t be connected normally. Don’t try adapters – send it to us.

Can you recover a password-protected WD drive?

Yes, if you know the password. We repair the hardware and unlock the drive with your password.
